Waiter, I think some pasta got into my plate of locusts

Waiter, I think some pasta got into my plate of locusts

There’s been a lot of talk about the benefits of converting to an insect-heavy diet recently. Cashing in on this trend is Café & Bar Ristorante Absente in Kinshicho, Tokyo who will begin offering Peperoncino de Locust which is a plate of spaghetti topped with generous piles of locusts.

In their press release, restaurant owner Pasta Dio would like to remind everyone that locusts are an excellent source of calcium, protein, and vitamin A and were used in Japan during times of war to fight malnutrition and save lives. They even claim that once you get past the initial heebie-jeebies, locusts actually have an addictive texture that makes you come back for more.

They also mention that the dish, which goes on sale from 29 May, is a whole new take on spaghetti all’aglio, olio e pepperoncino with a garlic and olive oil sauce so good you can drink it from the dish. All this can be yours for 1,200 yen (US$12).

Absente is no stranger to creative dishes. Their menu also boasts Pasta Gyoza, 10,000 Fish Pasta (contains a day’s worth of calcium), Pasta Cocktail (pasta topped with absinthe) and the hugely popular Carbonara Angel which is topped with a mountain of five different cheeses.
